Reflective safety gear designed around the science of how drivers actually see people at night.
About ReflecToes
Three in four pedestrian deaths in the U.S. happen after dark. Most of the people involved thought they were visible. ReflecToes exists to close that gap, with gear designed from the ground up around published research on how drivers detect and recognize people at night.
Meet the Founder
Ben O'Brien founded ReflecToes after noticing firsthand how inadequate most reflective running gear was after dark. His background was specific: from 2010 to 2015 he worked at Avery Dennison in product development, creating retroreflective materials for Nike and Under Armour. He knew exactly how the technology worked, and exactly where it was missing.
The spark came in 2016 while cycling with his family in Montreal. Watching the reflectors on bike pedals and wheels light up in traffic, the question formed: why doesn't running gear put reflective material where the body moves? In 2017, after extensive sampling and manufacturing development, ReflecToes launched.
The Science Behind the Design
Every ReflecToes product is designed around one core principle from road-safety research: biological motion, or biomotion. When small reflective points move in the pattern of human joints (ankles, knees, wrists), drivers don't just detect you. They recognize you, and recognition triggers a slowdown response far faster than detection alone.
Published research confirms that biomotion retroreflective placement at the ankles and knees produces driver recognition from up to 7 times farther away than dark clothing. That's the number that drives every design decision we make.

The Technology
ReflecToes uses proprietary retroreflective materials with a bonding technology engineered for washability. Unlike iron-on reflective patches that crack and peel, the reflective elements are integrated into the fabric construction to maintain performance through repeated washing.
The material uses a glass microsphere system: tiny beads that refract incoming headlight beams back toward their source. Because a driver's eyes are on roughly the same axis as their headlights, the returned light lands precisely where they're looking.
